Bird flu outbreaks in India's Kerala state have been reported, sparking renewed worries about the disease's impact. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) announced that India experienced 11 outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu on farms in the southern Kerala state last month. This news is particularly concerning, given the widespread devastation avian influenza has caused globally in recent years.
The H5N1 virus led to the death of a significant number of birds. According to WOAH, a total of 54,100 birds, primarily ducks, perished due to the outbreaks. As a precautionary measure, an additional 30,289 birds were culled. These outbreaks, first detected on December 9th and confirmed on December 22nd, represent the first instances reported among poultry since May.
