A young amputee's determination to conquer the para-swimming world is an inspiring story that deserves to be told. Annabel Kiki, a 17-year-old from Cannock, has overcome incredible odds to pursue her dreams. But here's where it gets controversial... some might argue that her journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit, while others might question the support systems in place for young amputees.
After being diagnosed with bone cancer at just 13 years old, Annabel had to face the reality of having her left leg amputated above the knee. It was a devastating blow, but she refused to let it define her. With a resilient spirit, she set out to reclaim her favorite hobbies and activities.
Annabel's local swimming club became her haven, and her hard work paid off with two gold medals at the Staffordshire County Swimming Championships. Now, she's preparing for her first national para swimming competition, determined to make her mark.
"I grab every opportunity that comes my way," Annabel says. "I won't let my past hold me back from reaching my full potential."
And her achievements speak for themselves. In 2024, she won the prestigious Golden Boot award at the women's amputee football World Cup, recognizing her as the top goal scorer. She's also taken up skiing again, walked the runway at London Fashion Week, and graced the pages of Italian Vogue.
"Even when I take off my leg in front of a crowd, I strive to be the best version of myself," Annabel adds. "I've faced horror, but even in the darkest times, you must find positivity. It's what pushes you through."
Her cancer diagnosis began with what she thought was a simple knee ache, but it led to 18 months of chemotherapy and the loss of her limb. Her brother, Archie, recalls the difficult time as a family, but he also speaks proudly of Annabel's resilience.
"No matter what Annabel sets her mind to, she'll achieve it and excel," he says.
Annabel has been training for her next challenge at Chase Terrace Academy, her alma mater, and the school's headteacher, Nicola Mason, couldn't be prouder.
