Can Chelsea Gray Keep the Unrivaled Rose Rolling Against Vinyl?
The Unrivaled Rose team showed no signs of a championship hangover, dominating their season opener with a 80-62 victory over the Lunar Owls. The key to their success? Chelsea Gray's exceptional performance.
Gray, known as the Point Gawd, elevated her team's play to new heights. She led the way with 35 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals in the game. Her outstanding performance was particularly evident in the fourth quarter, where she scored all 11 of Rose's points, solidifying their lead. The team's plus/minus statistic during Gray's minutes was the highest among all players in the opening day games, showcasing her impact.
Now, the Rose team faces a challenge as they prepare to play against Vinyl, who had a disappointing opener.
Vinyl's 58-42 loss to Laces was not their worst defeat, but they had a six-point lead at halftime, which they maintained until the third quarter. However, Laces then went on an 8-2 run, and Vinyl struggled to score again. This scoring drought is concerning, especially considering the team's talented offensive players, Rhyne Howard, Courtney Williams, and Erica Wheeler.
The issue arises when these players isolate themselves for jumpers early in the shot clock, as they did in the second half against Laces. This approach hinders their offensive flow. Additionally, if Vinyl doesn't maintain consistent defensive effort, Chelsea Gray will exploit their weaknesses. She can drain jumpers, find teammates like Azurá Stevens and Shakira Austin for easy baskets, and set up teammates for open 3-pointers.
On paper, Vinyl has more talent than Rose, but their performance against Laces was far from their potential. The question remains: can they improve and challenge Rose's dominance?
Meanwhile, the Breeze team, led by Will Bueckers, aims to secure a 2-0 start against Hive.
Breeze's opening win over Phantom showcased Bueckers' scoring prowess, as she scored 10 of her 24 points in the first quarter, displaying confidence and aggression. She also contributed six assists and five rebounds, outperforming Phantom by 12 points.
Dominique Malonga also made an instant impact, achieving a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
In contrast, Hive's key players, Kelsey Mitchell and Sonia Citron, struggled to find cohesion. Their partnership, where Citron's 3-point shooting would create space for Mitchell to attack the basket, failed to materialize. Both players' shooting was off, combining for only 7 out of 25 field goals.
For Hive to keep up with Breeze, these players will need to improve. Monique Billings and Saniya Rivers, who provided good energy off the bench, will also be crucial for Hive's success.
