Exciting News for Kettering: A New Secondary School is on the Way!
The government has officially announced that a new secondary school will be constructed in Northamptonshire, much to the relief of local residents and officials.
This initiative revolves around a free school planned for the Hanwood Park estate in Kettering, a project that received initial approval from the Department for Education back in 2021. After evaluating various educational proposals, the government has decided to move forward with this project, even as it has halted other free school developments nationwide.
Kettering's Labour MP, Rosie Wrighting, expressed her gratitude for the confirmation from government ministers, acknowledging the community's concerns regarding the overwhelming demand on existing secondary schools, which are already facing capacity challenges.
In 2011, planning permission was granted for the construction of 5,500 new homes at Hanwood Park, one of the largest planned garden communities in the country. According to information from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, this expansion heightens the need for educational facilities in the area.
The Reform UK-led North Northamptonshire Council has analyzed the situation and predicts that without this new school, there will be a significant deficit in available secondary school places by the 2027-2028 academic year.
At a recent council meeting, local father David Wilmot highlighted a pressing issue: he referred to the prolonged delays in establishing the new school as a "catastrophic failure". He emphasized the impact this would have on families, stating, "By 2030, hundreds of children who deserve access to quality education locally will be compelled to travel farther afield, which will not only congest our roads but also disrupt family life and place immense pressure on our already overburdened existing schools."
Originally slated to open in 2024, the timeline for the school's construction had remained uncertain until now. Chris Langdon, the project director at Hanwood Park, shared his enthusiasm: "We are ready to get started. With additional amenities, including the upcoming David Lloyd Club, this decision marks a strong endorsement of the sustainability and future success of Hanwood Park."
The council is now seeking more detailed information regarding the timeline for the school's establishment, which will be managed by the Orbis Education Trust.
Wrighting concluded by promising her constituents that she will continue to advocate for a definitive opening date and will keep them informed as new details emerge.
