No Tears for Jenrick: Tory Party's Reaction to His Departure (2026)

A dramatic political shift has left the Tory party unmoved, with former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson revealing, "No tears were shed over Robert Jenrick's departure."

In an interview with Sky News' Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Baroness Davidson shared her thoughts on the recent defection of Mr. Jenrick to Reform, a move that sparked his dismissal from the Conservative Party's shadow cabinet.

"It's safe to say that not many within the Tory ranks are mourning Jenrick's exit," she remarked.

But here's where it gets controversial: Baroness Davidson suggested that Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, might even gain a "mini bounce" in popularity within the party due to her handling of the situation.

"Her response was strong and decisive," Davidson praised, referring to Badenoch's defiant statement moments before Jenrick's announcement.

"I've had my criticisms of Badenoch in the past, but she handled this with authority. She didn't try to negotiate or ask him to stay; she knew exactly what needed to be done."

And this is the part most people miss: Badenoch's decisive action may have prevented a potential leadership challenge by Jenrick, who some suggest was eyeing her position post-May local elections.

"If Jenrick truly believed Badenoch was on her way out, he would've stayed to be part of the next leadership," Davidson pointed out.

So, while the Tory party moves on, the question remains: Was Jenrick's defection a calculated move, or a sign of deeper divisions within the party? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
