In a striking turn of events, two-time welterweight world champion Shawn Porter has revised his prediction for the eagerly awaited clash between Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson, set to take place at the end of this month. This matchup has been generating considerable buzz within the boxing community, and Porter's insights are sure to draw attention.
Shakur Stevenson has largely navigated his professional career with relative ease, showcasing impressive performances. His only lackluster outing was a rather uneventful decision victory against Edwin De Los Santos, which stands out as the sole instance where he didn’t dominate the bout across his impressive record of 24 fights spanning three weight classes.
Now, Stevenson, hailing from Newark and fighting as a southpaw, aims to add a fourth weight class to his accolades by challenging WBO super-lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez. This encounter marks a significant battle between the champions of the 135-pound and 140-pound divisions, stirring excitement and anticipation among boxing fans.
Initially, Porter had offered Stevenson a favorable ‘60/40’ advantage going into this match, acknowledging that while Stevenson has displayed a flawless technique, Lopez has shown vulnerabilities in his game. However, during a recent episode of The PorterWay Podcast, Porter surprised many by indicating a shift in his stance, leaning toward Lopez. He expressed that Lopez’s dynamic activity in the ring could potentially be the key to achieving a decision victory.
Porter elaborated, saying, "I believe Teofimo Lopez possesses more pathways to victory compared to Shakur because Shakur is quite steadfast in his style. I admire his approach, but it may prove challenging to draw him out of that comfort zone."
He contrasted this with Lopez, who has the versatility to adopt a defensive strategy or provoke aggression from his opponent, stating, "Teo can entice his opponents to engage, while Shakur tends to advance cautiously, focused on defense. Lopez can deliver powerful strikes, including big right hands and looping left hooks, making him unpredictable and dangerous."
Porter suggested that the fight could very well unfold in a way where both fighters take their time through the rounds; however, he believes Lopez might seize crucial moments to edge ahead on the scorecards by performing just slightly better overall.
The highly anticipated Lopez-Stevenson fight is set for Saturday, January 31, and will feature two additional championship bouts on the undercard, promising an exciting night for boxing enthusiasts.
